A Visit to Denkmalhof Gernewitz
On the 20th March 2026, Gabi Ziegenbalg, Antonella Tigrano and Sven Ziegenbalg visited Denkmalhof Gernewitz on behalf of IBZ-Salzchemie — a special venue that also served as the setting for a full day of professional exchange.
The programme covered four closely related topics in the day-to-day practice of heritage conservation: lime in restoration, nano-lime (CaLoSiL®), nano-gypsum, and salts, salt damage and desalination methods. Following the presentations, the focus shifted to hands-on practice — participants had the chance to work directly with CaLoSiL® and CaLoXiL samples and explore their application first-hand.
What made the day truly memorable was the lively discussion it sparked. Craftspeople, conservators, architects and representatives from public authorities all joined the conversation — a reminder of just how valuable direct exchange between science and practice can be.
The team at Denkmalhof Gernewitz also made sure the day was a culinary highlight: pizza and cake, both fresh from the wood-fired oven. Many thanks for the warm hospitality and the wonderful response!
